Excursion to the Lake Bâlea, Saturday, 17th Sepember 2011
Explore the Carpathian garden: Sibiu – Cârţa – Bâlea Lake
Along the Olt River we head towards Avrig, where we will visit the summer residence of the Governor of Transylvania Samuel von Brukenthal built in baroque architectural style. Our next stop will be in Cârţa where we will visit the Cistercian Abbey, built in 1202 in early Gothic architectural style and was the easternmost Abbey of the Cistercian Order. Passing through forests we arrive at Bâlea Waterfall and at Bâlea Glaciar Lake (2.030 m). Ceausescu build this road over the highest mountains in Romania to show how string communism in Romania is. This road is open for traffic only 3 months / year. From up here we have a very nice view over Transylvania. In the late afternoon we will return to Sibiu.
