Professor Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Detlef Zuehlke
Initiator and CEO of SmartFactory KL

Detlef Zühlke received his MS in electrical engineering and PhD in mechanical engineering from RWTH Aachen University. After several years as a research manager in factory automation at the WZL (machine tool laboratory) in Aachen he joined Lufthansa German Airlines and served as a general manager aircraft maintenance at Frankfurt airport. In 1991 he became a Professor for Production Automation at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) until his formal retirement in 2017. From 2008 to 2017 he acted as Director of the Innovative Factory Systems Department at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern.

Zuehlke is considered one of the, if not THE, father of the concept of the smart factory. He founded the “SmartFactory Kaiserslautern Technology Initiative” association in 2005. He has been serving as the Chairman of the Executive Board since the beginning – still active today. This industry-driven research and demonstration center for smart factory technologies is recognized as the birthplace of the Industrie 4.0 paradigm. He received numerous honorary awards amongst them the State Order of Merit and in 2017 he was honoured as “Manufacturing Leader of the Year” by the Manufacturing Leadership Council in the USA for his thought leadership on the topic of Industrie 4.0 / Smart Factory. He also works closely with the German Government, acting as a Member of the Scientific Council of PlattformIndustrie 4.0. He is also a consultant to the Austrian government.
