The Roads Now Taken: Higher Education Responses and Responsibilities for International Migration, Displaced Persons and Refugees 4-5 Nov, 2019, RAMADA HOTEL Sibiu, RomaniaEvent PMM & E Foundation Migration and Displacement represent two global challenges that have particularly dire and traumatic consequences for the future of individuals. Not only can migrants lose a valuable opportunity for full human development, but both their home and destination countries may lose an enormous potential contribution to social, economic and cultural development. Human mobility - both forced and by choice - needs to be controlled in a win-win manner for both home and destination countries of refugees and migrants worldwide. The old and current ways of handling refugee and migration issues are definitely not achieving satisfactory results despite the billions of dollars spent by both home and receiving countries. Obviously, the challenge demands new approaches by all organizations and fund managers involved directly or indirectly with migration, asylum and refugee integration policy implementation. Aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and of achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4: ‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’, the PMM & E Foundation and UNESCO Chair in Quality Management of Higher Education and Lifelong Learning invite you to participate in a THINK TANK on migration with the theme: The Roads Now Taken: Higher Education Responses and Responsibilities for International Migration, Displaced Persons and Refugees that will take place from 4-5 Nov, 2019, at the Ramada Hotel, Sibiu, Romania. The event aims to look at robust, sustainable and concrete ways in which higher education institutions (HEIs) can support the integration of migrants, refugees and displaced persons in their destination/host countries and prepare them for their eventual return to their home nations. Specifically, the THINK TANK will look into short and long-term institutional policies and solutions for improving the quality of life of people in their host countries, with a specific focus on the European dimension of forced migration to the continent from North Africa and the Middle East. During a two day THINK TANK, the PMM & E Foundation and the UNESCO Chair in Quality Management of Higher Education and Lifelong Learning plan to also strengthen strategic partnerships with key stakeholders through networking and advocacy with policy makers, the UN system and other inter-governmental organizations, civil society, research institutes and the private sector as well as to pursue opportunities and advance short- and long- term solutions on how to address migration from Africa and the Middle East to Europe by effective use of education and relevant sustainable socioeconomic activities. The format of the THINK TANK allows for roundtable sessions organized in robust thematic streams of sessions focusing on the realities of migration, migrant populations and routes, sustainable education opportunities for migrants and refugees, migration policies, labour migrations, economic impacts, remittances as well as non-migrants and the wider impact of human mobility on sending, transit and receiving societies. On behalf of the organizers, we thank you and look forward to welcoming you to the conference! Venue: The Ramada Sibiu Hotel, Emil Cioran Street, No 2. Think Thank Program (EN)
